About Cinque Terre National Park

Italy's smallest national park, established in 1999, has a unique triple UNESCO designation as World Heritage Site, Biosphere Reserve, and Protected Marine Area, safeguarding both the five villages and the ancient terraced landscape that surrounds them.

The Parco Nazionale delle Cinque Terre was established in 1999, covering approximately 3,860 hectares of coastline and hillside between Levanto in the north and La Spezia in the south, with an adjoining protected marine area. It is Italy's smallest national park. The park holds a rare triple UNESCO designation: the five villages and their terraced cultural landscape were inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 1997; the broader ecosystem was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve; and the marine environment between the villages is a Protected Marine Area. The park was established partly in response to the abandonment of traditional terrace farming, which was causing the rapid collapse of the ancient drystone-wall terrace system, a collapse that increases the risk of landslides affecting the villages and their infrastructure. The park manages the hiking trail network, collects the Cinque Terre Card fee that gives access to the trails, and coordinates conservation programmes aimed at supporting the farming families who maintain the terraces.

Did you know? The Cinque Terre is one of very few places in the world with a UNESCO triple designation, simultaneously a World Heritage Site, Biosphere Reserve, and Marine Protected Area, recognising the cultural, ecological, and marine significance of this 3,860-hectare park.
