About Monterosso al Mare

The largest of the five Cinque Terre villages, Monterosso is the only one with a real sandy beach and is celebrated for its salted anchovies, terraced lemon groves, and the haunting cliff sculpture known as Il Gigante.

Monterosso al Mare is the westernmost and largest of the five Cinque Terre villages, divided by a rocky headland into the medieval Antico quarter and the modern Fegina beach district. Its kilometre-and-a-half stretch of sandy beach is unique in the Cinque Terre and has made it the most tourism-developed of the five. At the northern end of Fegina beach stands Il Gigante, a fourteen-metre reinforced-concrete figure of Neptune built against the cliff in 1910 by sculptor Arrigo Minerbi, whose outstretched arms once supported a terrace above but were lost to wartime bombing and a 1966 storm. The Gothic church of San Giovanni Battista in the Antico quarter dates from 1307. Above the village, terraced lemon groves produce fruit for the locally made limoncino liqueur, while the acciughe di Monterosso, anchovies salted in sea-salt-filled ceramic jars for a minimum of forty days, are considered the finest in Italy and a cornerstone of Ligurian cuisine.

Did you know? Monterosso's anchovies are salted in ceramic jars for a minimum of 40 days, a method unchanged for centuries, producing a flavour of extraordinary depth and complexity unmatched by any commercially canned variety.
