About Anacapri Village

The upper village of Capri, quieter and less touristy than the main town, with its own distinctive character, the Villa San Michele of Axel Munthe, the Church of San Michele with its famous majolica floor, and the chairlift to Monte Solaro.

Anacapri is the second of Capri's two municipalities, occupying the upper western part of the island above the cliffs. Until 1874 it was accessible from Capri town only by the roughly 921-step Scala Fenicia (Phoenician Stairway), cut from the cliff; the road connecting the two towns was not built until the 19th century. This historical isolation gave Anacapri a distinct character and culture that it retains today, quieter, less fashionable, more genuinely Caprian than the main town. The principal attractions are the Villa San Michele (the villa and museum of the Swedish physician and author Axel Munthe, with extraordinary views from its terrace), the Church of San Michele with its 18th-century majolica floor depicting the Garden of Eden (walkable on raised boardwalk), and the chairlift to Monte Solaro. Anacapri has fewer luxury boutiques and more everyday shops than the main town, and several of the best traditional restaurants on the island are in Anacapri. The archaeological interest includes the Scala Fenicia and the nearby Roman-era Torre di Materita.

Did you know? The Church of San Michele in Anacapri has a remarkable 18th-century majolica tile floor depicting the Garden of Eden, a complete scene with Adam, Eve, the serpent, the apple tree, and dozens of animals, all in vivid hand-painted ceramic tiles. Visitors walk along raised boardwalks to protect the floor while still being able to see the entire scene from above.
