About Monte Solaro: Summit and Chairlift

The highest point of Capri at 589 metres, reached by a vintage single-seat chairlift from Anacapri, with views spanning the entire Bay of Naples, the Gulf of Salerno, the Sorrento peninsula, and on the clearest days the distant coast of Sicily to the south-west.

Monte Solaro is the highest point of Capri, at 589 metres above sea level, situated above the village of Anacapri on the western high ground of the island. It is reached by a vintage open chairlift (seggiovia) built in 1952, a single-person open chair on a wire, ascending through Mediterranean woodland and macchia above Anacapri in about 12 minutes. The chairlift itself is part of the experience: riding it, you pass through pine and holm oak forest, past terraced vineyards and lemon groves, with the Gulf of Naples appearing below and expanding as you rise. At the summit, the views are extraordinary in all directions: the entire Bay of Naples from Gaeta to the Sorrento peninsula, with Vesuvius prominent; the Gulf of Salerno with the Amalfi Coast; the islands of Ischia and Procida; and on exceptionally clear days the outline of Sicily 250 kilometres to the south-west. The summit has a small café, a ruined Spanish watchtower, and a 19th-century chapel. The ascent can also be made on foot via a well-marked path from Anacapri in about 45 minutes, offering a different and more gradual experience of the mountain vegetation.

Did you know? The chairlift to Monte Solaro was built in 1952 and is one of the oldest continuously operating chairlifts in Italy. It carries single passengers in open chairs, there is no enclosed cabin, no safety bar that flips down, just a chair and a wire. In 70-plus years of operation it has carried millions of passengers without a significant safety incident.
