About Via Krupp

A dramatic zigzag cliff path cut in 1902 by the German industrialist Friedrich Krupp, descending from the Gardens of Augustus to Marina Piccola through 100 metres of sheer cliff, one of the most remarkable pieces of path engineering in Italy.

Via Krupp is one of the most dramatic short paths in Italy, a zigzag walkway cut into the sheer cliff face on the southern side of Capri town, descending approximately 100 metres from the Gardens of Augustus to Marina Piccola in a series of tight hairpin bends carved from the limestone. The path was commissioned by Friedrich Alfred Krupp, the German steel industrialist who visited Capri regularly in the early 1900s and spent considerable sums on the island's infrastructure. He employed local stonemasons to cut the path in 1902, creating a private route between his villa above and his grotto and boat at sea level below. After his death in 1902, the path was donated to the municipality of Capri and opened to the public. Via Krupp is frequently closed to pedestrians due to rockfall risk, chunks of the limestone cliff above occasionally break free, and when it is open it requires some caution on the steep hairpin sections. When open and visible from the Gardens of Augustus above or from Marina Piccola below, it is one of the most spectacular views on the island: the path threading impossibly down the cliff face, with the Mediterranean visible between the hairpin bends.

Did you know? Via Krupp is regularly closed to pedestrians due to rockfall risk. The limestone cliffs above the path shed small rocks and occasional larger pieces, and the narrow path below provides no protection. When it is closed, visitors can only see Via Krupp from above (at the Gardens of Augustus) or from below (at Marina Piccola or from a boat), which in some ways provides better views than actually walking the path.
