About Faraglioni Rocks

Three iconic limestone stacks rising from the sea off Capri's southern coast, the island's most recognisable natural symbol, home to a unique blue lizard, with a natural arch through which boats traditionally pass for good luck.

The Faraglioni are three massive limestone rock stacks rising from the sea off the southern tip of Capri, visible from almost everywhere on the island and from considerable distances out to sea. They are, with the Blue Grotto, the most recognisable natural feature of Capri and appear in countless photographs, paintings, and illustrations of the island. The three stacks, from east to west, Faraglione di Terra (attached to the mainland by a small spit), Faraglione di Mezzo (middle), and Faraglione di Fuori (outer), rise to heights of 109, 82, and 106 metres respectively. The Faraglione di Mezzo has a natural arch through which boats can pass; this passage is a traditional part of the Capri boat tour and is considered a rite of passage. The Faraglione di Fuori is the isolated habitat of the blue lizard (Lacerta caerulea), a colour variant of the common Italian wall lizard found only on this specific rock. The Faraglioni are best seen from the Belvedere di Tragara, a clifftop walkway on the southern coast of Capri that brings you closest to the rocks and provides the most dramatic viewpoint.

Did you know? The legend of the good luck kiss through the Faraglioni arch is one of those Italian folk traditions whose origins are entirely obscure but whose persistence is total. Every boat tour of Capri includes the passage through the arch, and virtually every couple on board attempts the kiss. The tradition has been documented in tourist accounts since at least the 19th century.
