About Rosengarten (Rose Garden)
Bern's most beloved hilltop park, 200 varieties of roses and irises, a panoramic restaurant, and the finest views of the old town, Federal Palace, and Münster from above the Nydegg quarter.
The Rosengarten is a public park and rose garden situated on the Altenberg hill above the Nydegg quarter of Bern, directly overlooking the old town from the north. Originally an 18th-century municipal cemetery (in use until 1877), the site became a public park in 1913 and was planted as a rose garden in 1917. Today it contains over 200 varieties of roses and irises, planted in formal beds across the terraced hillside. The garden is one of Bern's most popular recreational destinations, particularly in June when the roses are in full bloom. But the primary attraction for many visitors is the panoramic view: from the rose garden terrace, the entire sweep of Bern's UNESCO-listed old town is visible, with the Federal Palace dome, the Münster spire, the Zytglogge, and the full arc of the Aare river all in one frame. The Rosengarten restaurant, housed in a historic pavilion, is one of the most atmospheric dining venues in the city.
Did you know? The Rosengarten was created in 1913 on the site of Bern's former municipal cemetery, the city chose to transform the hillside into a rose garden rather than develop it for other uses.
