About Kunstmuseum Bern (Fine Arts Museum)

Switzerland's oldest public art museum, a remarkable collection spanning medieval art to the present, including the world's largest Hodler collection and major works of Impressionism and 20th-century art.

The Kunstmuseum Bern is Switzerland's oldest public art museum, founded in 1879, with a collection that traces the history of art from the 14th century to the present. The museum's most celebrated holdings are its extraordinarily comprehensive collection of works by Ferdinand Hodler (1853-1918), the great Swiss Symbolist and Post-Impressionist painter, whose monumental canvases of Swiss landscape and allegorical subjects are among the most powerful images of late 19th-century Swiss national identity. Beyond Hodler, the museum holds significant collections of Italian Primitives, works by Paul Klee (who was born near Bern), Cézanne, Monet, Seurat, Picasso, Giacometti, and major figures of 20th-century and contemporary art. In 2014, the museum famously inherited a bequest of works by Nazi-looted art collector Cornelius Gurlitt, adding significant but controversial works to its holding.
