The Gurten is Bern's local mountain, a 858-metre wooded hill about 4 km south of the city centre, accessible by a historic funicular railway that has been operating since 1899. The summit offers one of the finest panoramic views of Bern, the Bernese Mittelland (the Swiss plateau), and the great arc of the Bernese Alps, the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau, on clear days. The Gurten park at the summit includes walking trails, a children's park, a miniature railway, restaurants, and a hotel. The Gurten Festival, held every July, is one of Switzerland's most beloved open-air music festivals, drawing international acts and tens of thousands of visitors.
