About Bernisches Historisches Museum

Switzerland's second-largest historical museum, a neo-Gothic castle building housing Celtic, Roman, medieval, and Swiss collections, plus the Einstein Museum exploring his life and work.

The Bernisches Historisches Museum is Switzerland's second-largest history museum, occupying a striking neo-Gothic castle building on the Kirchenfeld plateau designed by André Lambert and completed in 1894. The museum's collections cover the full history of the Bernese region and Switzerland, from prehistoric and Celtic artefacts through the Roman period, medieval times (with remarkable collections of tapestries, goldsmith work, and armour), the early modern period, and the 19th and 20th centuries. The museum is particularly celebrated for its collection of Burgundian war trophies captured from Charles the Bold of Burgundy after the Swiss Confederation's decisive victories at Grandson, Murten, and Nancy in 1476-77. Since 2005, the museum also houses the Einstein Museum, a comprehensive presentation of Einstein's life and intellectual legacy.

Did you know? The museum holds the world's largest collection of Burgundian War booty from the 1476-77 Swiss victories over Charles the Bold, captured banners, tapestries, and personal possessions of the Duke.
