About Bärengraben & Nydegg Quarter
The historic Nydegg quarter at the tip of Bern's old-town peninsula, site of the original medieval castle, the Nydegg Bridge, the Bärengraben, and the start of the riverside path to the Rose Garden.
The Nydegg quarter is the easternmost part of Bern's old town, occupying the pointed tip of the sandstone peninsula above the Aare. This was the original fortified nucleus of medieval Bern: the Nydegg castle, built by the Zähringen dukes in the 12th century, stood on the very tip of the peninsula before being demolished and replaced by the Nydegg church in the 14th century. The Nydeggkirche, a late-Gothic church with remarkable stained glass, stands on the castle foundations. Below it, the Nydegg Bridge (1844) crosses the Aare and connects to the Bear Park and the path along the river bank to the Rose Garden. The old Bärengraben, the circular bear pit that housed Bern's bears from 1857 until 2009, is still visible beside the bridge, now used for small events and displays.
