Bern's museum quarter on the Kirchenfeld plateau, a grand late-19th-century residential district housing the Natural History Museum, Swiss Alpine Club Museum, and the Swiss Shooting Museum.
The Kirchenfeld plateau, directly across the Kirchenfeld Bridge from the old town, is one of Bern's most elegant residential districts, planned and built in the 1880s and 1890s as a refined suburb for the city's professional classes. Its wide, tree-lined boulevards and grand apartment buildings give it a distinctly Viennese or Parisian character. The district is also home to several of Bern's museums, clustered around the Bernastrasse: the Naturhistorisches Museum Bern (Natural History Museum), one of Switzerland's finest, housing the famous Barry the St. Bernard dog; the Museum für Kommunikation (Communications Museum); and various specialist institutions. The Kirchenfeld Bridge (1882) connecting the district to the old town is itself a fine historic iron bridge.
