About Bern Tram Network & City Transport

Bern's beloved tram network, one of the few surviving and expanding historic tram systems in Switzerland, threading through the covered arcades and old-town streets since 1890.

Bern's tram network is one of the defining features of the city's character and one of the few remaining historical tram systems in Switzerland still operating and expanding. The first trams began running in Bern in 1890, initially powered by compressed air, with electric operation introduced in 1901, threading through the medieval old town streets and under the covered arcades, an extraordinary sight that has become one of the most distinctive visual images of the city. Today the network comprises six tram lines running through the city and into the suburbs, supplemented by trolleybuses. The trams run under the Lauben (arcades) of the Marktgasse and Spitalgasse, creating the remarkable spectacle of modern urban transport gliding through an 800-year-old medieval arcade. Bernmobil, the city transport operator, has consistently invested in expanding the network with new low-floor, accessible vehicles.

Did you know? Bern's trams have been running since 1 October 1890, first powered by compressed air, then electrified in 1901, making it one of the oldest continuously operating tram systems in Switzerland.
