About Zentrum Paul Klee

The world's largest museum dedicated to Paul Klee, Renzo Piano's wave-shaped building on the Schöngrüne hill, holding 4,000 works by the Swiss-German master of 20th-century modernism.

The Zentrum Paul Klee is the world's most important museum dedicated to the work of Paul Klee (1879-1940), one of the most original and celebrated artists of the 20th century. Klee was born near Bern and returned to the city in 1933 after being dismissed from his professorship at the Düsseldorf Academy by the Nazi regime. The museum was designed by the Italian architect Renzo Piano and opened in 2005. Its distinctive form is three rolling wave-shaped hills rising from the landscape of the Schöngrüne hill on the city's eastern outskirts. The building contains the world's largest collection of Klee's work, approximately 4,000 works spanning paintings, drawings, and watercolours, of which around 200-400 are on display at any time in rotating exhibitions. The museum also includes an auditorium, restaurant, and educational facilities.
