About Crown Liquor Saloon

A lavishly decorated Victorian gin palace owned by the National Trust, featuring ornate tilework, gas lighting, and intimate wooden snugs, opened in its current form in 1885.

The Crown Liquor Saloon is one of the finest Victorian gin palaces in the world and one of the very few pubs owned and operated by the National Trust, the charity usually associated with grand country houses and castles. Standing directly opposite the Europa Hotel on Great Victoria Street, the Crown dazzles the eye from the outside with its extraordinary exterior tilework, swirling botanical designs in rich terracotta, olive, and cream. Inside, the central bar is backed by columns of polished granite and mirrors reflecting the warm amber light of genuine Victorian gas lamps. Ten lockable wooden snugs run along one side of the bar, each with carved panels and a bell to summon staff, a feature that allowed Victorian ladies to drink in relative privacy. The mosaic floor, the stained glass, and the ornately carved ceiling all contribute to one of the most theatrical pub interiors anywhere in Europe. The pub was purchased by the National Trust in 1978 and meticulously restored to its 1885 appearance.

Did you know? The Crown Liquor Saloon is one of the very few pubs in the world owned by the National Trust, which usually manages castles and stately homes.
