The Cathedral Quarter is Belfast's most creative and energetic neighbourhood, a dense web of cobbled streets and Victorian warehouses clustered around St Anne's Cathedral on Donegall Street, transformed since the peace process from a derelict industrial zone into the city's most sought-after arts and nightlife destination. The Quarter's transformation is one of the great urban regeneration stories of post-conflict Belfast: buildings that were empty or bombed-out during the Troubles have been repurposed as galleries, studios, restaurants, and some of the finest bars in Ireland. McHugh's Bar on Queen's Square, occupying a building dating from 1711, is one of the oldest structures in Belfast. The Duke of York on Commercial Court and the John Hewitt on Donegall Street are beloved local institutions. The Black Box and Oh Yeah Music Centre celebrate a city, and a wider region, that has produced Van Morrison, Stiff Little Fingers, Snow Patrol, and (from Derry) The Undertones. Every October, the Belfast International Arts Festival transforms the Quarter into a city-wide celebration of theatre, music, dance, and visual arts.
