About Falls Road Peace Murals

The famous Republican and nationalist murals of West Belfast's Falls Road, including the iconic International Wall and the portrait of hunger striker Bobby Sands, telling the story of the Irish Troubles.

The Falls Road, running west from Belfast city centre through the Catholic nationalist heartland of West Belfast, is one of the most politically significant streets in Ireland. For six decades it has been the centre of Irish Republican resistance to British rule in Northern Ireland, the home community of the IRA, and the site of some of the most intense urban conflict of the Troubles. Today it is famous above all for its murals, huge, vivid works of art painted on the gable walls of terraced houses, telling the story of the Republican movement in direct visual terms. The International Wall, running along the Falls Road near the Sinn Féin offices, is the most celebrated mural site, expressing solidarity with liberation movements worldwide: Palestinian, anti-apartheid, and Basque causes appear alongside Irish Republican imagery. The portrait of Bobby Sands, the IRA prisoner who died on hunger strike in 1981 after 66 days without food, aged 27, is painted on the Sinn Féin advice centre and is among the most recognised political murals in the world. Black taxi tours of the Falls Road and Shankill Road murals are among Belfast's most popular visitor experiences.

Did you know? Bobby Sands died after 66 days on hunger strike in 1981 at age 27, he had been elected as an MP to the Westminster Parliament just weeks before his death.
