About Ulster Museum
Northern Ireland's national museum, offering free admission to world-class collections spanning art, history, and natural sciences, including an Egyptian mummy and Spanish Armada treasures.
The Ulster Museum is Northern Ireland's national museum, sited at the edge of the Botanic Gardens in South Belfast and free to enter. Its collections span art, history, archaeology, and natural sciences, making it one of the most comprehensive museums in the British Isles. Following a dramatic £17-million renovation completed in 2009, the building was reimagined with additional gallery space and a dramatically enhanced visitor experience. Among the museum's most celebrated exhibits is Takabuti, an Egyptian mummy who lived around 2,500 years ago, whose CT scans and DNA analysis have revealed her to be a young woman of priestly class, probably assassinated. Equally remarkable is the Spanish Armada collection, exquisite gold jewellery, weapons, and navigational instruments recovered from the Girona, a galleass that sank off the Antrim coast in 1588 with over 1,300 men aboard. The art galleries hold outstanding Irish and European collections, and the natural history wing explores the unique geology of Ireland.
Did you know? Takabuti is the oldest Egyptian mummy in Ireland and DNA analysis has revealed she likely had reddish-brown hair, similar to many present-day Irish people.
