About Belfast Castle
A romantic Scottish Baronial mansion built in 1870 on the wooded slopes of Cave Hill, offering panoramic views over Belfast and the lough, gifted to the city in 1934.
Belfast Castle sits on the forested eastern slopes of Cave Hill, 120 metres above sea level, commanding sweeping panoramic views across Belfast city, the River Lagan, and Belfast Lough to the hills of County Down beyond. The castle is a Victorian country house built in the Scottish Baronial style, all turrets, corbelled battlements, and rough-hewn stone, fashionable during Queen Victoria's reign, inspired by her beloved Balmoral. Constructed between 1862 and 1870 for the Donegall family, it was completed and eventually presented to Belfast Corporation in 1934 by the 9th Earl of Shaftesbury. One of the most charming legends attached to the castle is the white cat prophecy: the castle's residents will prosper only as long as a white cat lives there. As a result, cat imagery is woven into almost every decorative element of the building, carved into stonework, worked into tiles, and depicted in stained glass. Today the castle operates as a restaurant and events venue, its terraced gardens descending through formal parterres toward the wilder slopes of Cave Hill.
Did you know? According to legend, the castle's residents will only prosper as long as a white cat lives there, so cat imagery is hidden in over 50 places throughout the building.
