About SS Nomadic

The last surviving White Star Line vessel and Titanic's tender ship, built at Harland & Wolff in 1911, she ferried first-class passengers from Cherbourg to the waiting liner before its fateful voyage.

The SS Nomadic, moored in Hamilton Dock beside Titanic Belfast, is the last surviving ship of the entire White Star Line fleet, making her the most direct physical connection to the age of the great ocean liners and to the Titanic story itself. Built at the Harland & Wolff shipyard in Belfast and launched in April 1911, the Nomadic was designed to serve as a tender at Cherbourg, the French port that was Titanic's first port of call. Because Cherbourg's harbour was too shallow for the giant liner, passengers were ferried out to the ship at anchor aboard the Nomadic. On the evening of April 10th, 1912, it was the Nomadic that carried 142 first and second-class passengers, including some of the most famous names on Titanic's passenger list, from the Cherbourg quayside out to the waiting liner. After decades of service, including a period as a floating restaurant in Paris moored on the Seine, the Nomadic was repatriated to Belfast in 2006 and opened as a museum ship following a meticulous restoration. She is now listed as a National Monument.

Did you know? On the evening of April 10th, 1912, the SS Nomadic ferried passengers including John Jacob Astor IV and Benjamin Guggenheim from Cherbourg out to the waiting Titanic, neither man survived the sinking.
