About NDSM Wharf

A vast post-industrial creative complex in Amsterdam Noord, a former shipyard transformed into studios, restaurants, street art, and one of Europe's leading festival venues.

The NDSM Wharf (Nederlandsche Dok en Scheepsbouw Maatschappij, Dutch Dock and Shipbuilding Company) is Amsterdam's most important post-industrial creative district, occupying the vast, abandoned shipbuilding facilities on the north bank of the IJ that were active from 1894 until their closure in 1984. Since 2000, the site has been gradually transformed by artists, cultural institutions, and creative businesses into a landmark of Amsterdam's creative economy. The enormous main hall, the Scheepsbouwloods, is now home to dozens of artist studios, the Pllek restaurant and beach bar, creative offices, and major exhibition spaces. The surrounding quayside hosts some of Europe's most important outdoor music and arts festivals, including the DGTL Festival, Pitch Festival, and Amsterdam Dance Event venues. The raw industrial character of the site, rusting cranes, massive concrete structures, graffiti-covered walls, has been preserved rather than sanitised, giving NDSM a sense of authentic creative freedom.

Did you know? At its peak in the 1950s, NDSM employed over 8,000 workers and launched dozens of ships per year, including some of the largest tankers ever built in the Netherlands.
