About Fondaco dei Tedeschi Rooftop
The medieval warehouse of German merchants on the Grand Canal, renovated by OMA architects, now a luxury department store offering free rooftop access with the best panoramic views over Venice.
The Fondaco dei Tedeschi, the warehouse of the Germans, was one of the most important commercial buildings in medieval Venice, a combination of warehouse, office, residence, and customs point for the German merchants who traded with the city from the 13th century onward. The vast palazzo next to the Rialto Bridge was rebuilt after a fire in 1505 and decorated with exterior frescoes by Giorgione and Titian, now largely lost, with fragments in the Ca' d'Oro.
The building was acquired by the luxury goods group DFS and renovated by the Dutch architecture firm OMA (Rem Koolhaas) as an upscale department store, which opened in 2016. The renovation preserved the historic atrium and the series of loggia-lined galleries surrounding it while inserting contemporary retail spaces.
The building's chief attraction for non-shoppers is its rooftop terrace, which is free to access (advance booking required) and offers what many consider the single best panoramic view of Venice, looking out over the terracotta rooftops and church domes toward the Grand Canal, Piazza San Marco, and the lagoon beyond.
Did you know? Giorgione and the young Titian painted frescoes on the exterior walls of the Fondaco dei Tedeschi in 1508, but they have almost entirely disappeared due to weathering. Only fragments survive in the Ca' d'Oro.
