About Venice Biennale
The world's oldest and most prestigious contemporary art festival, held since 1895 in the Giardini pavilions and the Arsenale, transforming Venice into the global capital of contemporary art every two years.
The Venice Biennale (La Biennale di Venezia) was founded in 1895 as a celebration of Italian art, making it the oldest major international contemporary art exhibition in the world. Today it is held every two years (odd-numbered years) in two main venues: the Giardini in the Castello district, where 30 national pavilions have been built by participating countries, and the spectacular spaces of the Arsenale.
The Biennale has two components: the main International Exhibition, curated by a prominent curator, and the National Pavilions, where individual countries present artists of their choice. Winning the Golden Lion at the Biennale is considered one of the highest honours in contemporary art. The German Pavilion, the American Pavilion, the French Pavilion, and others have been the sites of defining exhibitions by artists including Cindy Sherman, Bruce Nauman, Gerhard Richter, and many others.
The city of Venice in Biennale years is transformed: hotels fill, galleries open, private exhibitions and collectors' events crowd the calendar, and the art world descends on the city in a way that reinforces Venice's unique position at the intersection of history, beauty, and contemporary culture.
Did you know? The Venice Biennale was founded in 1895, making it 50 years older than the Cannes Film Festival and 34 years older than the first Academy Awards, the oldest major international art festival in the world.
