About Teatro La Fenice
'The Phoenix' opera house has burned twice and been rebuilt each time, it premiered Verdi's La Traviata in 1853 and remains one of the most beautiful and historically significant opera houses in the world.
Teatro La Fenice, the Phoenix Theatre, is Venice's great opera house, one of the most beautiful and historically important operatic venues in the world. Inaugurated in 1792 after the company that built it lost its previous theatre, the San Benedetto, in a lawsuit, it was named La Fenice (the Phoenix) to symbolise the society's rebirth from that misfortune, a name that proved prophetic.
The theatre was the venue for world premieres of operas by Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti, and above all Verdi, whose La Traviata (1853) and Rigoletto (1851) both had their world premieres here. The theatre burned catastrophically in 1836 but was rebuilt and reopened the following year. It burned again on 29 January 1996, in a fire deliberately set by electricians trying to avoid penalty clauses, and was rebuilt again, opening in 2004 with a performance of La Traviata.
The rebuilt La Fenice is a meticulous reconstruction of the pre-1996 interior, restoring the tiered box-seat tiers, gilded ceiling, and red velvet of the 19th-century interior. The theatre remains one of the most important venues in the Italian operatic world.
Did you know? La Fenice has burned down twice, in 1836 and 1996, and been rebuilt both times, living up to its name 'The Phoenix'. The 1996 fire was deliberately set by electricians trying to avoid penalty clauses on an overdue renovation contract.
