About Arsenale di Venezia
The largest shipyard in medieval Europe and the foundation of Venetian naval power, capable of producing a complete warship per day, now the spectacular venue for the Venice Biennale.
The Arsenale di Venezia was the greatest industrial complex of medieval and Renaissance Europe, at its height in the 15th century, an enormous complex of shipyards, workshops, rope factories, and warehouses covering about 46 hectares at the eastern end of Venice, employing some 16,000 workers. The Arsenale was the beating industrial heart of Venetian naval and commercial power, and the source of the city's ability to project force across the Mediterranean.
At its peak efficiency in the early 16th century, the Arsenale could produce a fully equipped war galley in a single day, using an early form of assembly-line production, hulls moved along a canal through different workshops while workers added equipment, sails, and armaments at each stage. When Henry III of France visited Venice in 1574 and watched the Arsenale produce a galley in the time it took him to eat his ceremonial dinner, he was reportedly astonished.
The Arsenale is the largest Gothic building in Europe. Its massive main gate (1460), the first Renaissance gateway in Venice, is flanked by Greek marble lions brought as trophies from the Aegean. Parts of the complex are now used as the exhibition venue for the Venice Biennale, and the spectacular spaces, with their soaring brick arches and lagoon reflections, make a magnificent setting for contemporary art.
Did you know? When Henry III of France visited Venice in 1574 and watched the Arsenale at work, a complete warship was launched and equipped in the time it took him to eat a ceremonial dinner, a deliberate demonstration of Venetian power.
