About Puerta de Bisagra

Toledo's grand northern gate, rebuilt for Emperor Charles V as a triumphal arch under a giant Habsburg double-headed eagle, and crowned by the stone angel said to have turned back the plague.

The Puerta de Bisagra (Puerta Nueva de Bisagra) is the grand main northern gate of Toledo. An older gate of Muslim origin, it was completely rebuilt in the 16th century under Emperor Charles V and Philip II, to designs by Alonso de Covarrubias, as a monumental entrance in the form of a Roman triumphal arch. Its outer face, flanked by two large round crenellated towers, is crowned by a huge imperial coat of arms bearing the Habsburg double-headed eagle, above which a pediment is topped by a statue of the city's guardian angel. The gate consists of two separate bodies, outer and inner, joined by high walls that enclose a defensive courtyard. Its name derives not from the Spanish word for hinge but from the Arabic Bab-Shaqra, an earlier gate leading toward the Sagra plain. It stands within the UNESCO-listed historic city of Toledo.

Did you know? The giant coat of arms over the gate carries the double-headed eagle of Emperor Charles V, so that anyone entering Toledo passed beneath the badge of the Holy Roman Empire, carved as big as a house.
