About Alcázar of Toledo

The mighty four-towered fortress crowning Toledo, built and destroyed for two thousand years, Roman wall, Moorish citadel, emperor's palace, civil-war ruin and modern rebuild, now Spain's Army Museum.

The Alcázar of Toledo is a great square fortress at the highest point of the city, with a tower at each corner. A stronghold has stood here since Roman times; it was fortified as a Moorish alcázar in the 10th century and rebuilt as a Renaissance palace under Emperor Charles V from the 1540s, with an internal staircase by Francisco de Villalpando. The building has been destroyed and rebuilt many times, including after a fire in 1887. During the Spanish Civil War it was besieged from July to September 1936, when a Nationalist garrison held out against Republican forces; the fighting left it in ruins, and it was reconstructed to its Renaissance form in the following decades. The 1936 siege was later mythologised by the Franco regime. The Alcázar now houses the Museo del Ejército (Army Museum), and stands within the UNESCO-listed historic city of Toledo.
