About Puerta del Sol

A jewel of a Mudéjar gate raised by warrior-monks, its Moorish arches built by Muslim hands for Christian lords, named for the carved sun above the arch and its marble tale of Saint Ildefonso.

The Puerta del Sol is a Mudéjar city gate in Toledo, built in the last quarter of the 14th century by the Knights Hospitaller, the Order of Saint John. Flanked by two crenellated towers, one round and one square, it combines a great horseshoe arch with an inner pointed arch and delicate interlacing brickwork, Islamic forms built by Muslim craftsmen for Christian masters. Above the arch two carved discs, a sun and a moon, give the gate its name; a large white-marble relief added in the 16th century, on the orders of the magistrate Gutiérrez Tello, shows the Virgin placing a chasuble on Saint Ildefonso of Toledo. Just below the gate stands an older Moorish gateway, the Puerta de Valmardón, on the way to the mosque of Cristo de la Luz. The Puerta del Sol lies within the UNESCO-listed historic city of Toledo.

Did you know? The gate is named for a carved disc of the sun set in its wall, paired with a carved moon; no one is quite sure why they are there, but from that little stone sun the whole gate takes its cheerful name.
