About Hospital de Tavera
A vast Renaissance hospital-palace beyond the walls, built by a cardinal as charity and as his own tomb, now home to El Greco's last great painting and Ribera's haunting bearded woman.
The Hospital de Tavera (Hospital de San Juan Bautista), long known as the "hospital de afuera," stands just outside the walls of Toledo, beyond the Puerta de Bisagra. It was founded in 1541 by Cardinal Juan Pardo de Tavera, archbishop of Toledo, and built over more than sixty years to designs begun by Alonso de Covarrubias, in a severe Renaissance style organised around a striking double courtyard. Its church holds the marble tomb of the cardinal, the last work of the sculptor Alonso Berruguete, who died in 1561. The building now houses a major private art collection of the Casa Ducal de Medinaceli, including El Greco's late Baptism of Christ and his portrait of Cardinal Tavera, and Jusepe de Ribera's celebrated portrait of the bearded woman Magdalena Ventura (1631). Restored and still furnished as a historic house, it has often served as a film location. It lies just outside the UNESCO-listed historic city of Toledo.
Did you know? The cardinal's marble tomb was the last work of Alonso Berruguete, the greatest sculptor of the Spanish Renaissance, who died in 1561 while finishing it; the dead face is said to be modelled on Tavera's own death mask.
