About Plaza Mayor de Segovia

Segovia's arcaded living room beneath the cathedral's honey-gold flank, a market square for 500 years, once a bullring, where Isabella was proclaimed Queen of Castile in 1474.

The Plaza Mayor is the heart of Segovia's old town, a wide arcaded square laid out in its present form in the 17th century and bordered on one side by the great apse of the cathedral. Long the city's market square, it still hosts a Thursday market that goes back to a grant by King Enrique IV; bullfights were held here until 1785. It was formerly the plaza de San Miguel, after an old church on the site where Isabella was proclaimed Queen of Castile on 13 December 1474; later renamings (plaza de la Constitución, Plaza de Franco) track Spanish political history. Around it stand the sober Herreran-style Casa Consistorial (town hall, built c.1610-1620), the Teatro Juan Bravo of 1917, and a central bandstand. It lies within the UNESCO-listed old town of Segovia.

Did you know? In this square, on 13 December 1474, Isabella was proclaimed Queen of Castile, a drawn sword carried point-up before her through the streets, a bold claim to a throne that began one of Europe's great reigns.
