About Casa de los Picos
A 15th-century mansion whose entire front is clad in more than 600 granite diamond-points, a house that appears to be wearing armour, now an art school on the climb to the Plaza Mayor.
The Casa de los Picos (House of the Points) stands on Calle Juan Bravo, on the street climbing from the aqueduct toward the Plaza Mayor. Built in the last third of the 15th century as a fortified townhouse for a noble family, its whole façade is faced with granite ashlars cut into sharp diamond points, said to number more than 600. Originally known by the family's name (Casa de los De la Hoz), it took its present name simply from that spiky façade; the diamond-point cladding is used here far more densely than on comparable Spanish buildings. Since 1977 it has housed a school of applied arts, today the Escuela de Arte y Superior de Diseño de Segovia. It lies within the UNESCO-listed old town of Segovia.
