About Iglesia de San Millán

One of Segovia's oldest and purest Romanesque churches, prized for a rare four-apse east end and shaded arcades, its shape a small copy of a great cathedral near the Pyrenees.

The Iglesia de San Millán, just below the aqueduct outside the old walls, is one of the oldest and purest examples of Segovian Romanesque, its main body built around 1111-1126. The rebuilding was promoted by Alfonso I 'the Battler' of Aragon, who ruled Castile through his marriage to Queen Urraca, and its floor plan is a small copy of the Cathedral of Jaca near the Pyrenees. It has an unusual four-apse east end, three naves, and two porticoed galleries of carved columns, whose capitals carry scenes such as the Magi's journey to Bethlehem and the Flight into Egypt. The tower beside it is older still, a pre-Romanesque survivor of the 11th century. Declared a national monument in 1931, it lies within the UNESCO-listed old town of Segovia.

Did you know? Where almost every church has one apse or three, San Millán has an unusual four, a richness of form that helps make this quiet parish church, begun around 1120, one of the purest gems of Segovian Romanesque.
