About Catedral de Segovia
'The Lady of the Cathedrals': one of the last great Gothic cathedrals in Spain, begun in 1525, a full century after the Gothic age had ended, to replace one wrecked in a revolt.
Segovia Cathedral (Our Lady of the Assumption and San Frutos), on the highest point of the old town beside the Plaza Mayor, is one of the last great Gothic cathedrals built in Spain, nicknamed 'la Dama de las Catedrales,' the Lady of the Cathedrals. It was begun in 1525, after the previous cathedral, which stood near the Alcázar, was destroyed in the Revolt of the Comuneros of 1520-21; the old cathedral's Gothic cloister was dismantled and rebuilt on the new site. Designed by Juan Gil de Hontañón and continued by his son Rodrigo, it has three naves, an ambulatory and numerous chapels, lit by around 65 stained-glass windows, with vaults some 30 metres high. Its bell tower rises nearly 90 metres; a wooden spire burned after a lightning strike in 1614 and was rebuilt in stone. The cathedral was consecrated in 1768 and lies within the UNESCO-listed old town of Segovia.
Did you know? Though it looks purely medieval, this Gothic cathedral was begun in 1525, a century after the Gothic age had ended and while the rest of Europe built in the Renaissance style, making it Gothic architecture arriving gloriously late.
