About Alcázar de Segovia

A fairy-tale castle riding its rock like the prow of a stone ship, from which Isabella rode out to be crowned Queen of Castile, its famous spires added by a king missing his Austrian wife's homeland.

The Alcázar of Segovia is a royal castle set on a rocky crag at the western tip of the old town, above the meeting of the Eresma and Clamores rivers; its silhouette, following the narrow spur it stands on, resembles the prow of a ship. A fortress is first recorded here around 1120, and it was rebuilt and enlarged by successive kings of Castile, who made it a favourite residence: Alfonso VIII, Alfonso X after a 13th-century fire, and John II, who raised the great keep that bears his name. Isabella I, then staying in the castle, was proclaimed Queen of Castile in Segovia in 1474. Philip II added the steep slate spires in the 16th century. Gutted by fire in 1862 and rebuilt, it later housed the Royal Artillery College and today holds the General Military Archive and a museum. It lies within the UNESCO-listed old town of Segovia.

Did you know? In December 1474 Isabella, staying in this castle, rode out from its walls to have herself proclaimed Queen of Castile in the city below, the queen who would unite Spain and send Columbus across the Atlantic.
