About Giardino della Minerva
A medieval medicinal herb garden terraced into the hillside above Salerno's historic centre, linked to the ancient Medical School, one of the oldest botanical gardens in Europe, it cultivates the same medicinal plants used by Salernitan physicians a thousand years ago.
The Giardino della Minerva is a terraced medicinal herb garden on the hillside of Monterone, above the historic centre of Salerno. It is believed to occupy the site of the medieval garden of Matteo Silvatico (1280-1342), a physician and teacher at the Schola Medica Salernitana who is considered the father of medical botany. His garden was used to grow and study the medicinal plants described in the medical texts of the Salernitana, many of which were ultimately derived from Arabic and Greek botanical sources. The garden was restored and reopened in 2001 after long abandonment, and today contains hundreds of medicinal plant species arranged according to the traditional Salernitana medical classification system, the four humours (blood, phlegm, yellow bile, black bile) and their associated elemental properties. It is now managed by the University of Salerno and serves as both a museum space and an active botanical research garden.
Did you know? Matteo Silvatico's major work, the Pandectae Medicinae (also called the Liber Pandectarum Medicinae), written around 1317, catalogued over 700 plant, animal, and mineral substances used in medicine, each with its Arabic, Latin, Greek, and Italian names, a remarkable multilingual reference work that reflects the cosmopolitan intellectual culture of medieval Salerno.
