About Lungomare di Salerno

A 2km award-winning promenade redesigned by architect Ricardo Bofill, running along the seafront from the old town to the new marina, one of the finest urban waterfronts in southern Italy, with palm trees, public art, and views of the Gulf of Salerno.

The Lungomare Trieste, Salerno's main waterfront promenade, was redesigned and rebuilt in the 1990s and 2000s by the Catalan architect Ricardo Bofill, transforming what had been a neglected post-industrial waterfront into one of the most celebrated urban promenades in southern Italy. The promenade extends approximately 2 kilometres along the seafront from the historic centre to the new marina and ferry terminal, lined with palm trees and illuminated at night by a continuous lighting scheme. The project has won several architectural and urban design awards and is studied internationally as an example of successful urban waterfront regeneration. The promenade provides the main public space for Salerno's daily passeggiata and is the setting for seasonal markets, music events, and the famous Luci d'Artista, the city's internationally celebrated winter light installation festival that has run since 1998, transforming the lungomare and the city centre with monumental illuminated artworks from November to January.

Did you know? Ricardo Bofill (1939-2022) was one of the most prolific and internationally recognised architects of the late 20th century, known for his monumental post-modern housing projects (La Muralla Roja in Spain, Les Espaces d'Abraxas in France) and his urban design work. The Salerno lungomare is considered one of his more restrained and successful urban design projects, praised for its sensitivity to the existing urban fabric.
