About Arechi Castle
A Lombard hilltop castle perched at 263 metres above the city, built in the 8th century by Arechi II, Prince of Benevento, it offers panoramic views of the entire Gulf of Salerno, the Amalfi Coast, and the Cilento hills.
The Castello di Arechi stands on a rocky spur of Monte Bonadies at 263 metres above sea level, dominating the entire Gulf of Salerno from a commanding position that made it the key defensive stronghold of the Lombard Principality of Salerno. The castle was originally built in the 8th century by Arechi II (duke and then prince of Benevento), who moved the Lombard capital to Salerno in 774 AD following Charlemagne's conquest of the Lombard kingdom in northern Italy. The castle was subsequently modified by the Normans, the Swabians, the Angevins, and the Aragonese over the following centuries. It contains a small museum with archaeological finds from the various periods of occupation. The view from the battlements is extraordinary, on a clear day you can see the entire arc of the Gulf of Salerno from the Sorrento Peninsula to the Cilento coast, with the islands of Capri and the Amalfi Coast clearly visible.
Did you know? Arechi II (died 787) was a remarkable ruler, not only a military and political leader but a patron of culture who established a scriptorium (manuscript copying workshop) in Salerno, attracted scholars and artists to his court, and promoted Lombard legal and administrative traditions. His court was one of the most culturally sophisticated in 8th-century western Europe.
