About Longobard Temple of Minerva

A 1st-century Roman temple dedicated to Minerva, later incorporated into the 8th-century Lombard palatine chapel of San Pietro a Corte, one of southern Italy's most striking architectural palimpsests, where Roman, Lombard, and Christian layers are literally visible in the same walls.

The Longobard Temple of Minerva is one of Salerno's most extraordinary archaeological layers, a Roman temple from the 1st century AD, dedicated to the goddess Minerva, patron of wisdom and medicine, that was incorporated into the fabric of the Lombard palatine chapel of San Pietro a Corte when Arechi II built his new Lombard capital here in 774 AD. The Roman temple's podium and columns were absorbed into the Lombard church's structure, creating a unique architectural palimpsest spanning nine centuries. Located in the tight lanes of the historic centre just below the cathedral, the site illustrates the characteristic medieval process of Christianising pagan sacred spaces, building atop them, reusing their stones, and redirecting their religious associations. Archaeological work has identified dedicatory inscriptions and architectural fragments confirming the Minerva dedication, a fitting pre-history for a city that would go on to house the world's first secular medical school under Minerva's patronage.

Did you know? San Pietro a Corte, Saint Peter at the Court, was the palatine chapel of the Lombard princes of Salerno, built by Arechi II as part of his ambitious programme to create a worthy capital for his principality after Charlemagne destroyed the northern Lombard kingdom in 774 AD. As a palatine chapel it was the highest-status private church in the kingdom, reserved for the prince and his court.
