About Markthal (Market Hall)
A stunning 2014 arch-shaped covered market hall with 228 apartments in its walls and an 11,000 m² ceiling mural, the largest food market in the Netherlands.
The Markthal opened in 2014 and immediately became one of the most visited buildings in the Netherlands. Designed by MVRDV architects, the massive horseshoe arch stands 40 metres tall and 120 metres long, enclosing around 100 food and produce stalls. What makes it truly unique is that its arched walls contain 228 apartments, residents literally live inside the arch. The interior ceiling is covered by the Horn of Plenty mural by Arno Coenen and Iris Roskam, spanning 11,000 square metres and depicting giant flowers, fruit, vegetables, insects, and fish in vivid colour. The Markthal connects directly to a large underground car park and to the city metro system.
Did you know? The Markthal's ceiling mural covers 11,000 square metres, making it one of the largest artworks in the world.
