The Cube Houses are one of the most original works of Dutch residential architecture ever built. Designed by Dutch architect Piet Blom and completed in 1984, the complex of 38 tilted cube homes sits at the Blaak district, connected to the street by the Blaaktoren (nicknamed "the Pencil"). Each cube is a home rotated 45 degrees and placed atop a hexagonal concrete pylon. The geometry means one triangular corner of each house points skyward, one points down into the pylon, and the four remaining faces become the walls. Inside, three levels of living space follow the cube's angled geometry. Blom's concept was to create a village within a city, with the cubes forming a roof over a public walkway below. The Kijk-Kubus show house is open to visitors as a museum apartment, giving a glimpse of daily life inside these extraordinary structures.
