About Hotel New York

The former headquarters of the Holland America Line (1901), the iconic twin-towered building from which millions of European emigrants departed for North America.

Hotel New York occupies one of the most historically poignant buildings in Rotterdam: the former head office of the Holland America Line, built in 1901. From the adjacent Wilhelminapier, the Holland America Line operated passenger services that carried millions of emigrants, mainly from Eastern and Central Europe, to the United States, Canada, and South America between the 1870s and the 1970s. The building's distinctive twin turrets and ornate brick façade made it one of the most recognisable structures on the Rotterdam waterfront. After the shipping line moved its operations to larger facilities, the building fell into disuse, before being sensitively converted into a hotel, restaurant, and bar complex in 1993. Today it remains one of the most atmospheric places to eat and drink in Rotterdam, with historic interiors, period furniture, and views across the Nieuwe Maas to the city skyline.

Did you know? The Holland America Line transported millions of European emigrants to North America from the Wilhelminapier between the 1870s and 1970s.
