About Spiaggia Grande
Positano's main beach, a broad crescent of dark pebbles backed by the full cliff face of the village, with beach clubs, boat hire, and the village reflected in the water at the perfect spot to appreciate the whole composition of Positano.
The Spiaggia Grande is Positano's main and most accessible beach, situated at the base of the village where the steep cliff meets the sea. It is a broad crescent of dark grey and black pebbles, Positano has no sand beaches, only the characteristic dark limestone pebbles of the Amalfi Coast, backed by the full height of the cliff with the village tumbling down above. The beach is divided between a free public section and a series of private beach establishments (lidi) that charge for the use of sun loungers and umbrellas. In the morning, the eastern end of the beach catches the sun first, and the cliff keeps the western end in shadow until late morning. The boats available for hire offer the key experience of Positano: the view from the water looking back at the village, which is how the village was meant to be seen. Swimming in the relatively calm water in the curve of the bay, with the cliff above you and the church dome visible among the houses, is one of the great pleasures of the Amalfi Coast.
Did you know? The cliffs of Positano and the whole Amalfi Coast are formed of Mesozoic limestone and dolomite, the carbonate rock of the Lattari mountains that were uplifted from an ancient sea floor. The dark grey pebbles on the beach are worn fragments of this rock, mixed with material washed down the mountain streams; the coast is karst limestone country, not volcanic, despite the proximity of Vesuvius across the bay.
