About Path of the Gods: Hike to Nocelle

The classic hike from Positano up 1,600 steps to the mountain hamlet of Nocelle and Montepertuso, with views of the coast from 450 metres, part of the famous Sentiero degli Dei (Path of the Gods) that traverses the Amalfi hinterland.

The path from Positano to Nocelle and the Sentiero degli Dei (Path of the Gods) is the most celebrated hike on the Amalfi Coast, a demanding but rewarding ascent from sea level to the high ground of the Lattari mountains that forms the spine of the Sorrento peninsula. The path begins at the western end of Positano, near the Santa Maria del Castello church, and ascends approximately 400 metres in a series of steps and mule tracks to the small village of Nocelle (population about 100). From Nocelle, the Sentiero degli Dei continues west to Bomerano, the hamlet of Agerola, a full traverse of about 7 kilometres with breathtaking views of the entire coast. The ascent to Nocelle alone involves approximately 1,600 steps; the full Path of the Gods takes about 4 hours in good conditions. The views from the high path, looking down at Positano far below, with the Li Galli islands visible offshore and the coast extending in both directions, are among the most dramatic anywhere on the Amalfi Coast. The path passes through the agricultural terraces that were maintained here for centuries: lemon groves, olive trees, vineyards. Much of this terraced agriculture has now been abandoned as the population has moved to lower settlements, but the terrace walls and the irrigation systems are still visible.

Did you know? The Sentiero degli Dei (Path of the Gods) was so named because the view from the high path is so extraordinary that it was believed only the gods could have such a perspective on the world. The path runs at approximately 400-500 metres above sea level, with the Amalfi Coast laid out in its entirety far below and the mountains of the Apennines visible on a clear day to the north.
