About Positano Seafront and Village

The most photographed village on the Amalfi Coast, a cascade of colourful pastel houses tumbling down a steep cliff to a pebble beach, with bougainvillea-draped staircases, ceramic-decorated streets, and the green-domed Santa Maria Assunta church as its centrepiece.

Positano is the defining image of the Amalfi Coast: a dense cluster of pastel-coloured houses, white, pink, terracotta, yellow, stacked vertically up a near-vertical cliff face above a small pebble beach. There are no flat streets; everything in Positano is a staircase. The bougainvillea and lemon trees cascade between the buildings. The green-domed church of Santa Maria Assunta anchors the composition at the water's edge. The village is entirely pedestrianised in its central core, all movement is on foot, all goods are delivered by hand or by small motorcycle through the network of stepped alleys. The population is small (around 4,000 residents), the village is compact, and the entire settlement seems to have been designed by a painter who wanted to maximise the drama of the natural setting. In summer, the village fills with visitors to a degree that strains its physical capacity, the famous pebble beach, the Spiaggia Grande, is packed, the restaurants overflow, and the stepped alleys are crowded. Early morning, late evening, or an autumn visit reveals a different, quieter place.

Did you know? John Steinbeck's 1953 Harper's Bazaar article about Positano is credited with beginning the modern tourist boom in the village. Before his article, Positano was known only to a small number of artists, expatriates, and dedicated travellers; after it, the village became an international destination. Steinbeck himself observed that "whereas most house foundations are vertical, in Positano they are horizontal", a vivid description of the village's near-vertical layout.
