About Petra tou Romiou (Aphrodite's Rock)
The sea stack on a pebble coast southeast of Paphos where, in Greek myth, the goddess Aphrodite rose from the foam of the sea; a famous viewpoint with a legend that swimming around it brings beauty.
Petra tou Romiou, 'Aphrodite's Rock', is a striking sea stack rising from the water on the coast road between Paphos and Limassol, about twenty-five kilometres southeast of the city. In Greek myth this is where Aphrodite, goddess of love and beauty, was born from the foam of the sea. The Greek name means 'the Rock of the Roman', linked also to the Byzantine folk hero Digenes Akritas, who is said to have hurled it to keep off raiders.
The cove is a beach of smooth pale pebbles, with the main rock and smaller stacks standing offshore below pale cliffs banded with reddish clay. A popular visitor legend says that swimming around the rock grants eternal beauty, though the sea here is often rough, so it is better enjoyed as a viewpoint, especially at sunset.
Did you know? In Greek myth Aphrodite, goddess of love and beauty, was born from the foam of the sea at this rock; the poet Hesiod told the tale of her birth from the waves.
