About Geroskipou
A town east of Paphos whose name means 'holy garden', famed for its rare five-domed Byzantine church of Agia Paraskevi with its old frescoes, and for the sweet 'Cyprus delight' made here since the 19th century.
Geroskipou, just east of Paphos, takes its name from the Greek for 'holy garden', traditionally linked to the sacred gardens of Aphrodite, past which ancient pilgrims walked on their way to her great sanctuary at Kouklia. Its treasure is the church of Agia Paraskevi, a rare five-domed Byzantine church of around the ninth century, built in a cross shape, with wall paintings from the ninth to the fifteenth centuries, among the oldest of their kind on the island.
The town is also famous for its sweets: Geroskipou loukoumi, the gel-like 'Cyprus delight' in the style of Turkish delight, made here since 1895 and the only such sweet in Europe to hold a protected regional status. A Folk Art Museum in an old consul's house shows the daily life and crafts of nineteenth-century Cyprus.
