About Catacomb of Agia Solomoni

An ancient rock-cut catacomb and chapel in Kato Paphos, a place of pilgrimage for centuries, with faded wall paintings, a healing spring and a great tree hung with the votive rags of hopeful visitors.

The Catacomb of Agia Solomoni is an underground complex of rock-cut chambers in Kato Paphos, an ancient tomb that became an early-Christian catacomb and chapel. Around a sunken court open five chambers, one holding a spring believed to heal, another a small painted chapel with faded wall paintings. It is dedicated to Agia Solomoni, linked by tradition to the mother of the Maccabean martyrs, and was a stop for almost every medieval pilgrim to Cyprus.

At the entrance grows a great terebinth tree, covered, along with the doorways and niches below, in strips of cloth and rags tied by visitors hoping for a cure, an old custom still kept today. Icons stand in the rock chambers and candles are lit, so that this half-natural, half-carved shrine remains a living place of prayer.
