About Quattro Canti

The theatrical Baroque crossroads at the heart of Palermo, where four concave facades decorated with fountains, statues of seasons, Spanish kings, and patron saints meet at a perfect octagon.

The Quattro Canti, formally known as Piazza Vigliena, is the baroque heart of Palermo, a crossroads so carefully designed that it might be the finest urban theatre set in southern Italy. Created between 1608 and 1620 during the Spanish viceroyalty, the intersection of Via Maqueda and Corso Vittorio Emanuele was transformed into an octagonal piazza by cutting the corners of all four buildings and giving each a matching three-tiered concave facade. Each facade is a vertical summary of Sicilian history and cosmic order: at the lowest level a fountain representing one of the four seasons; at the middle level a statue of a Spanish king; at the top a statue of one of Palermo's four patron saints. The composition is extraordinary in its symmetry and ambition, and the play of sunlight on the concave stone surfaces changes the atmosphere completely throughout the day.

Did you know? The four concave facades each represent: a season (fountain), a Spanish king (statue), and a Palermo patron saint (top niche), a complete cosmology of Baroque Palermo read vertically.
