About Norman Palace
The oldest royal palace in Europe, built over Phoenician and Arab foundations, today housing the Sicilian Regional Parliament and the dazzling Palatine Chapel.
The Norman Palace, known in Italian as Palazzo dei Normanni, stands on a hill in western Palermo that has been the seat of power in this city for over two and a half thousand years. Phoenicians, Romans, Byzantine governors, Arab emirs, and Norman kings each in turn built their seat of government on this strategic high ground. The current structure incorporates foundations from all these periods, making it a layered archaeological palimpsest as much as a building. The Normans, who arrived in the 11th century, greatly expanded the palace, and it was Roger II who added the Palatine Chapel on the second floor, the chapel that is still considered one of the supreme masterpieces of world art. Today the building serves as the seat of the Sicilian Regional Assembly, and visitors can tour the royal apartments, the Palatine Chapel, and the extraordinary Torre Pisana, which contains an astronomical observatory.
Did you know? The same palace has served as the seat of government continuously since the Phoenicians, through Arab emirs, Norman kings, and today the Sicilian Regional Parliament, over 2,600 years of unbroken political power on this hill.
