About Palatine Chapel
The jewel of Norman Palermo: a 12th-century royal chapel covered floor to ceiling in golden Byzantine mosaics with an extraordinary Arab muqarnas ceiling.
The Cappella Palatina is almost certainly the most beautiful room in Sicily, and one of the most ravishing small spaces in all of Europe. Built between 1130 and 1140 by Roger II on the second floor of the Norman Palace, this royal chapel represents the absolute pinnacle of the Norman-Arab-Byzantine artistic synthesis. Every surface of the interior gleams with gold mosaic: the walls, the apses, the arches, and the nave are covered in dazzling Byzantine-style tesserae depicting scenes from the Old and New Testaments, the lives of Saints Peter and Paul, and portraits of the Norman kings receiving their crowns directly from Christ. Yet above the nave hangs a ceiling of breathtaking complexity: an Islamic muqarnas ceiling of carved and painted wood, the finest example outside the Arab world, painted with figures, animals, and arabesques in rich colour. Greek, Latin, and Arabic inscriptions run throughout the building. It is a chapel built for a king who ruled over Muslims, Christians, and Jews equally, and it shows.
Did you know? The ceiling above the nave is a painted wooden muqarnas, an Islamic honeycomb decoration, the finest example surviving outside the Arab world, painted with polo players, dancers, and exotic animals.
